World Mental Health Day 2019 and Biodynamic Massage
World Mental Health Day began to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those living with mental illness, and to educate us in looking after our own mental health to stay well. We are making great strides as a society to overcome the stigma attached to having a mental illness, and people’s understanding of what is needed to support our well-being is on the up.
Mental health is no different to physical health in terms of having strategies for preventing illness developing, or early intervention if symptoms start to emerge. We know, for instance, that living a healthier lifestyle enables our bodies to fight off infections more easily and can prevent certain physical illnesses occurring. The same is true for our mental health.
It’s important to remember that mental health is not just the absence of a diagnosed mental illness, and that if we aim at keeping good mental health can help prevent illnesses occurring. In the same way that having a strong immune system helps us to fight off infection, building strong mental resilience helps us when our mental health comes under pressure.
What might we experience if our mental health is declining?
There are many physical and psychological symptoms that a person might experience if their mental health is deteriorating, including:
- Lower energy levels
- Feeling overwhelmed by everyday activities
- Feeling unhappy or dissatisfied with life
- Upset digestive system
- Anxiety and agitation
How can Biodynamic Massage help?
One of the keyways of developing resilience is getting to truly know yourself; your likes, your dislikes; what sparks your fire and what leaves you cold. We assume we know ourselves well; after all, we’ve been with us from day one! But sometimes, even when life appears to be moving along steadily, you find yourself experiencing one or two of these symptoms and can’t put your finger on why.
Biodynamic Massage addresses both the body and the mind. It provides a non-demanding, nurturing space to explore what might be happening to unsettle the balance in your mental, or physical, health.
This therapy puts no expectations on the body, instead it is an invitation to increase your understanding of what your body is communicating through your symptoms, supporting it to gradually re-establish the normal self-regulation and natural healing capacity we all possess. It encourages curiosity towards symptoms rather than judgement of.
By using a combination of techniques, this therapy meets the emotional and physical needs of each individual. Depending on which techniques are used in a session, some people will experience biodynamic massage as extremely gentle and calming, another as energising and enlivening.
